DishWhere Lite
DishWhere Lite is projected to launch in the iPhone app store in June 2009. The light version will be available for free and will focus on establishments in New York City’s lower east side. I was hesitant to release the game with out the community integration, because with out the community much of the player motivation is lost. But in the end I think the feedback gained from a single player...
CHINA!
Looks like DishWhere is going to have an opportunity to be tested in China this summer while I’m co-teaching a four week course in Beijing and Shanghai with Parsons. The curriculum is focused on an input, process, output model of creation and collabortion. DishWhere will be used as a media collection tool for a larger project, culminating as an installation in the EArts Shanghai arts...

what's in a name?
What to name my app. After reading a very useful article on Mashable (http://mashable.com/2009/02/21/how-to-build-an-iphone-app/) on mobile development, I’ve been thinking more about the name of my game. I’m currently using “Off the Menu” but I’m not in love with it. Here’s my simple criteria for naming:
1. one or two words
2. have some blantant reference to...
Peer Review Abstract
Off the Menu is a big urban game for the adventurous foodie. The game invites people to explore new restaurants and food shops by completing and creating challenges that give players insider information about restaurants and shops around the city. The game is played with an iPhone and makes use of the GPS functionality to track the players movements as they travel around the city. The game is...

research & experiments
1. A brief list of the research and experiments you’ve performed the past two weeks.
I interviewed Katie Salen and among other things discussed the possibility of working with her and the Wagg Society on a big game called the Island Project. She also gave me a list of relevant contacts and offered to make introductions for me. Katie also pointed me towards some areas of pedagogy that I...
Democracy in America
I found Sharon Hayes piece at the Democracy in America exhibit to be the most inspiring. The recreation of the demonstrations she held this summer was compelling and recreated the ephemeral experience quite well. The scattered speakers and projections through out the space felt very much like you were walking through a chanting crowd, giving you the gutteral response to participate. The emotion...

Re:Activism revision prototype #1
Problems to address:
quality vs. quantity strategy, racing mechanic doesn’t encourage engaging experiences
issues with phone use
don’t know how to use camera
memory
hard to verify challenges at the end of the game
no sharing of game interactions at the end of play
solidarity/sabotage card
Ideas from brainstorming:
having an item to act as the...
Re:Activism feedback
via Julienne, anthropology student who helped design the game:
Hmmm… okay, I remember that there was some dissatisfaction with the fact that if you really wanted to win, you couldn’t engage with the sites because that required spending a lot more time and energy - so the basic premise of the game seemed a bit in conflict. Possible ways to resolve that were to somehow reward...

when approaching an expert:
1. context - you, your work, explorations, elevator pitch, abstract
2. Why chose him/her? - show that you’ve done your homework and know who they are
3. What you’re trying to find out - questions: advice on…, feedback on…, other resource suggestions
* what do you need to know?
* identify expert
* research expert
*compose interview
Budget Hero game
Budget Hero is a game that lets you choose how the federal budget will be raised and spent.
there is a lot of reading, you really have to want to learn
easy to game
good superficial education on the issues
no consideration/metric for the backlash or state of the people, didn’t give you a view of how your choices would affect jobs, education, etc.
good interface
added candidate badges,...

Common features of games that make them effective, Colleen Macklin
They can model systems and complexities.
They include embedded incentives (including to win)
They spark dialogue and analysis beyond the game, which connects players and issues to other audiences.
They are experiential and dynamic, so that players must make changes in the game environment.
They create empathy be placing...
Notes: How People Learn
Chap. 3
Measures of transfer play an important role in assessing the quality of people’s learning experiences. Different kinds of learning experiences can look equivalent when tests of learning focus solely on remembering (e.g., on the ability to repeat previously taught facts or procedures), but they can look quite different when tests of transfer are used.
World Without Oil
- serious game that simulates the “what if” an oil crisis occurred
- people contributed through stories online, in blogs, videos, images, emails and voicemails
- ARG - not role play, it’s real play, talk about your own life as if the fiction of the game were true
- “pre-created” a possible near-future scenario: a global oil shock where demand rises 5% over...

- if you narrow your topic using nouns derived from verbs, you will be one step closer to a claim that could be challenging enough to interests your readers - What you do not know or understand but feel like you must - ask who, what, when, and where, then ask how and wh - adding “because i want to find out how/why…” helps to define they reason you are pursuing the question -...

prototype notes
What Do Prototypes Prototype? What is a prototype?
A prototype can really be anything that furthers the understanding of the proposed/potential design solution.
Can vary from low to high fidelity and be represented in any medium that is applicable
Is a tool for the designer to get more insight into the proposed solution/interaction while the design is still in development. It helps shape the...

- photos can also be sent through email by web enabled phones, con: it is more time...
