Flickr/Google maps mashup
Ok, so looking into the capabilities of mapping photos to a map from a mobile phone. Finding thus far:
- photos can be emailed from a typical phone to your Flickr account with tags to sort them appropriately, con: there is a charge to send pictures if you don’t have a media plan, plus: really easy to do
- photos can also be sent through email by web enabled phones, con: it is more time consuming, plus: no additional charges
- once the photos are in your Flickr account they can be manually placed on a Google map, from there you can go through Google to make a custom map of the images you tagged by filtering through a Flickr map content add-on
- no easy way to upload photos and place on a map from a phone (ie - in the field)
- from Google maps a custom map can be made by entering locations and other information in a Google doc spreadsheet and using a plug-in, it will automatically place the points in the correct place and upload the photo, but the photo info must be placed in html code, which can be found on the Flickr site under “share>embed it, and in the same cell as the name, the map you create is not married to the greater Google map/Flickr community
-there is the option to use Google Earth, there are tools that help generate KML files, but to enable contributors to add to the map they would have to have access to the source files
- i think google maps is the most accessible for our purposes and the users, i think the best plan of action is for the researchers to plot the map points by hand and add info through the map editing bubbles as we have been doing, pictures can be added to the bubbles by uploading from a web address or embedding html both of which can be facilitated by Flickr, it would be ideal to have the players send the pictures and videos they take while playing to a Flickr account, the images can be tagged so they are orgainzed in the correct accounts
